Driven by a belief in the power of ideas and their impact on building individuals and strengthening social cohesion, and within the framework of the “TARABUT” project implemented by Safadi Foundation in cooperation with the Spanish organization AIDA and funded by the European Union, Safadi Foundation launched a series of dialogue sessions titled TTALKS. This initiative serves as an inspiring platform bringing together a select group of speakers to share their experiences, ideas, and visions across various fields that address real-life issues.

Under the title “Inclusion and Reintegration of Individuals with Deviant Behavior as a Path to Strengthening Social Bonds”, the first dialogue session was held with Ms. Suzanne Jabbour, Executive Director of Restart Center specialized in the rehabilitation of victims of violence and a member of the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture. The session took place at Safadi Cultural Center in Tripoli, in the presence of a diverse audience of social, security, and political figures.

During the session, Jabbour spoke about the close relationship between her professional journey and social cohesion, noting that the latter lies in a society’s ability to heal its wounds before they turn into threats. She explained that social cohesion can be measured in any society through the ways authority is exercised when doors are closed and no one is watching. She also pointed out that detention centers reveal the naked truth of systems, stressing that the most dangerous aspect of prisons is not merely the loss of a prisoner’s freedom, but the loss of its true meaning, namely the rehabilitation of individuals. She concluded by raising a critical question that must be addressed: who are we; those who know and remain silent, or those who possess the ability to bring about change?

She then engaged directly with the audience through a series of questions covering various issues she had discussed, concluding that anyone who enters a prison, even to visit an inmate, comes out appreciating the value of every moment of freedom they enjoy. She called on everyone to cooperate in strengthening social bonds among community members in order to reduce the factors that lead to the loss of freedom.

In closing, Safadi Foundation President and former Minister Mohammad Safadi, along with the Mayor of Tripoli Dr. Abdel Hamid Karimeh, presented Ms. Jabbour with a commemorative shield in recognition of her efforts in the service of humanity and human rights.
